According to the latest Bloomberg Innovation Index, seven of the 10 most innovative countries in the world can be found in Europe. As a world leader in financial and biological technology, Switzerland is in third place and thus the highest ranking European country!
The front-runner is South Korea. The Asian country has occupied the top position in seven of the nine years since the index was published.
This year, the U.S. dropped out of the top 10. That's not exactly honorable, since they still led the first innovation index in 2013. The country performed particularly poorly in higher education, even though the U.S. universities are world-famous.
The Bloomberg index analyses dozens of criteria using seven equally weighted metrics, including research and development spending, manufacturing capability and concentration of high-tech public companies.
Especially in times of a global pandemic, innovation is more important than ever. Nevertheless, innovation alone is not the holy grail. It is the implementation, the use in practice and the adoption that is the real metric of success.
